Red Tail P-51 Mustang The P-51 Mustang was a long range escort ghter aircraft that entered service during the Second World War. The Mustang was used by several allied air forces in virtually every theatre of war, and served many roles from air superiority, to ghter bomber, to reconnaissance aircraft. It is arguably most famous for its role as an escort ghter during the daylight strategic bombing campaign over occupied Europe. The long service range of the P-51 meant it was one of the rst allied ghters to be able to protect allied bombers from the Luftwaffe all the way to and from targets deep within Germany. Her introduction over European skies immediately reduced bomber losses, and she served in that role until the end of the war. After the Second World War the Mustang saw service again in the Korean conict until the introduction of jet aircraft made the prop driven ghters obsolete. The CAF Red Tail Squadron’s rare P-51C Mustang was used to train aircrews until the end of the war in 1945. After the war it became a display aircraft until the Commemorative Air Force took possession of it in the late 1980’s. After an extensive rebuilding project, she ew again in 2001 for the rst time in 45 years. This Mustang, now christened “Tuskegee Airmen” is painted with a bright red tail to honor the airmen who trained in the groundbreaking Army Air Forces African-American pilot training program at Moton Field and Tuskegee Army Aireld, Alabama between 1941 and 1945. Her markings represent all of the personnel that are now known as Tuskegee Airmen, including pilots, bombardiers, navigators, ground crews, mechanics, cooks, ambulance drivers, medical staff, administrative personnel, etc. Her colors represent the four ghter squadrons of the 332nd Fighter Group: the 302nd Fighter Squadron, the 99th Fighter Squadron, the 301st Fighter Squadron, and the 100th Fighter Squadron.
